Colorado's Serengeti
I managed to get away and go to RMNP on Saturday afternoon. I stopped by Erik's place to visit. He was getting some nice traffic. Thanks for the suggestion, Erik, to go to Rainbow Curve and hike up a ways. The sunset didn't happen because of the clouds, but I did get to photograph some trees that were really cool. There was hardly any wind!

This shot is in Moraine Park obviously, but as I stood there it struck me that this is as close as we have in Colorado, or even America, possibly, to having something similar to the Serengeti in Africa. The elk were just all over the park and even into Estes.

Comments and critiques welcome, and thanks for looking,

Morris

Keeping the scale from the peak down to these elk works really nicely here Morris. I like it.

I like the comp very much here. What bothers me is somewhat flat light, and that house in the forest. Very nice image overall though. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Morris,
I have said to people and people have said to me a few times, "It's like being on a safari." A couple of years ago I was in RMNP with a friend. We were in Moraine Park photographing the elk and there was a guy standing next to us. He said that same thing lol.
I like the layering displayed here with Long's Peak, the trees, the meadow, then that bunch of elk. Nice shot.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Momo, I would very much have liked to not have that house in the shot, but you know it's difficult as there are houses all along the south side of Moraine Park. I didn't want to wait until the herds moved enough to clear them. And yeah, Kelly, I was pretty sure I wasn't the first to say it, but there were so many in Moraine that afternoon, it struck me again how similar it looks to photos and films I have seen of Africa.

If you squint just so, you can even imagine that's Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background.

OK, maybe not - but it's a nice shot and a good analogy!
