I have an opportunity to go to a conference in Steamboat Springs in August, and, having never really been to Colorado, though it might be a good opportunity to see some of the Rockies. I can either fly into Denver or Steamboat Springs, and could add 3-4 days before or after my trip (August 6-10) to do something. But I'd rather not have to rent a car myself and all that, so if there's anyone that lives in the area that would be interested in something like that (a 3 day backpack would be truly ideal), let me know!
Duuuude! I just checked out the images on your blog. Wow! To be as young as you appear to be in your picture, and to have a collection of images that strong? You've got a future in this, my friend! I'll spend more time browsing later, but that Tehachapi Mtns. shot at the top, and those bird photos below it, are just mind-bogglingly gorgeous. The Pumpkin Patch one and the desert flower ones, too.
As for a Colorado trip, I'd suggest you fly right into Steamboat. There's a paradise waiting nearby in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness. Or the Flat Tops Wilderness to the southwest. As for a trail partner, I'm probably too old to keep up with you, and barely know what I'm doing tomorrow, let alone in August, but I'll bet someone here would love to meet up for a wilderness photo experience.
I'm afraid I'm older than Todd. (I know, how is that even possible) There will be someone, I guarantee, to go along with you. I will be very envious. Todd's suggestions are good for where to go, too. Good luck, and may there be just enough clouds to enhance your shooting.

Steamboat's airport is tiny and does not accept commercial flights. The closest airport that accepts commercial flights is Hayden, about 20 miles down the road. So, unless you can fly by private plane, flying into Steamboat is not an option.
If you did fly into Denver, a great option would be renting a car and driving from the airport (DIA) through Boulder, via the Peak to Peak Highway, with a stop in Indian Peaks Wilderness (lots of craggy peaks and high alpine lakes, possibly some wildflowers at that time). Then, you could hit Rocky Mountain National Park, going over Trail Ridge Road and out of the west side of the park and into Steamboat.
If you can fly into Steamboat or Hayden and hook up with a partner, there are lots of great backpacking options in the wilderness areas around Steamboat, but getting to them without a car or a trip partner will be tough (unless you like testing your luck on hitchhiking). I make a monthly trip to Steamboat from Denver and know the area fairly well, so email me if you would like more specific recommendations or ideas for that area or the other places I mentioned along the way. August will be a perfect time to visit, too - good timing!
I'd be up for it Floris, I would prefer to do the San Juans but thats typically in July from what I read so I'm sure steamboat would be just as nice in August. I've admired your webpage and photos you post on FM for sometime. I can't hang with the best but I sure can hang with the worst on long hikes. But I am working on it and by August I would think i can hang a lot better
WOW! Floris, you have some incredible images and some from from Pasadena no less! I grew up in Monrovia. One of my favorite places to shoot was the Mormon Rocks area off the I-15 -when it was not too smoggy. Living in Colorado now.
I'm in. I have a 4Runner and plenty of room if you want a ride as well. I live in Denver and still have to work out my summer plans but I like the idea of backpacking for 3 days/night in August. Looks like I might just split my summer into a few 3 night trips so this is perfect. You can email me directly if you want to discuss some options.
