Today's Fog: Failure and Success
As i told Todd in his last post, i expected the cloud tops to be 9-10K ft this morning. I decided to gamble on 9K ft, and head up Rampart Range Rd after a lovely 3 1/2 hrs sleep. The plan was to shoot Pikes Pk before and at sunrise with the nearly full moon. I got a few hundred feet up, and the fog was so thick i couldnt see more than 5 feet, so i was driving at 5-10 mph. Finally, i got to ther overlook and realized that the top of the fog was at 9500 feet, a couple hundred feet too high. I was resigned to shoot fog shots until it burned off, but just at sunrise, the fog suddenly cleared and i saw the summit of PP rising above the clouds, with the sky lit up pink, and the nearly full moon setting directly behind the summit! Unfortunately, i had my wide angle on the 5D, and by the time i swapped lenses and focused (AF was useless) the fog had rolled back in
It would habe been the shot of a lifetime. By the time the ceilings lowered again, 15 minutes later, the color was gone and so was the moon :frown:
Ah well, i at least got a few decent shots of the Peak (one more at ESS)and it was probably worth the lost sleep.

Took a few of GOG on the way out.

Wow, I really like that Garden shot! I never made it down there til lunchtime, and only passed through before heading back up RRR. Your Pikes stuff is excellent, too. Great morning, wasn't it?!

Great fog pics Stan, well done. I like them all.

Nice images Stan! The GoG shot reminds me of some images of fog I took in the Garden in 2007.

These are all nice, but I particularly like the comp in #4. The air looks super clean too. Thanks for sharing, and sorry about your missed lifetime shot.

Stan,

I really love #s 1, 3, 4 (wish the shade wasn't on the right hand side, though), and 5. Heck, #2 is nice too. Excellent job this morning. Too bad you missed the shot you were looking for, but you have some keepers for sure.

Pretty decent days work there Stan even if you did not get pinks and the moon. :toast:

Hi Stan,
Sorry about your missed shot. But I really love # 1, # 3 and # 4. The lighting is awesome. Very nice.

Stan, Great group of images! The light is fantastic. So many times I've had the same experience of seeing a great shot unfold and just missing it, how frustrating it can be. But then there's the day when it all comes together and makes it all worthwhile.

1,4,and 5 are amazing, but I think 5 is my favorite. I should have taken my camera to work Sunday night but whenever I do, the weather just doesn't perform as desired. I drove by GoG at about 8:20AM sans camera.

1, 4 and GOG for me - great series, Stan - you're on a roll. I hope that you asked Todd's permission to shoot Pike's ~ he owns that peak!

Hey, since he owns the peak, do you think he'll give me permission to shoot the south side reservoirs?--thats what i really want to do

Great stuff Stan, well worth the effort of getting up there IMO. :toast:

I really like the way the mountain range is peeking above the clouds in the first image. Also really like the red of the rocks in the last image. Really stands out.
