Since I got an Ipod I have been looking at photographer's applications.

One useful one is the DOF calculator. Another is the bubble level. If I had an Iphone or a G1 phone the GPS would be useful.

I'd like to hear if anyone else has found useful downloadable software app's. I am always impressed when you guys know the bearing of the sun or moon at sunrise/moonrise on any given day, is there an Ipod app. for that?

Comments welcome.

A bubble level app for an iPod? Really??? Where can I get that, and will it work on a Nano?

Sorry Todd, but both applications Bill mentioned are only available for the iPod Touch :frown:

Looks like an app called Darkness can do sunrise sunset times, moonset moonrise times, azimuth and all that good stuff for any location. A Touch is only $200 Todd. Since you can do wifi and email and stuff on it it is really a cool gadget.

I have an iPhone and use DOF Master and the bubble level regularly. I don't know what you can download on iPods, but you can get tide charts, astronomy apps (like VelaClock, which calculates sunrise, sunset, phases of the moon and a bunch of other stuff), apps for applying Tiffen digital filters, etc for the iPhone. There are lots of kind of useless/kind of cool apps, like a panorama maker for your iPhone camera and the Mulletizer, which can turn any photo of a person into a photo of that person with a mullet. There is even an app for HDR for photos made using the iPhone camera. Obviously, some of these are useful for serious photographers, others are just distractions that make the iPhone camera more fun. I do not have all of these, but they are all available for a few bucks.

Google Earth can also be used on an iPhone, which can - obviously - have photography applications. The GPS feature on the iPhone is cool, but overrated, btw. Good for cities, but pretty worthless once you get beyond cities and towns.

I don't have the touch, just a nano and 30gb ipod, but I do use a $99 Palm Z22 for photo apps. and of course organisation :). The palms can also use "DOF master For Palm or For iPhone/Touch I also have a Sunrise/sunset app http://www.40-below.com/palm/ and sun compass http://www.brothersoft.com/sun-compass-for-palm-103517.html
The last 2 I think may be palm only, but I bet there is iPod touch versions.
One thing to point out is ipods and palms aren't designed for COLD temperatures, so they are of limited use in the field during winter!.

I have a G1 and I have a level Application, DOF application, sunrise sunset (with GPS), moon phase & lens angle application for pano's on it. Best of all all the applications were free!

What happens to the Ipod when it gets cold Nick? Display blanks?? Battery fails?? I haven't tested it.

Not 100% sure what happens to the ipod, but I know the Palm the screen fades out, and probably the battery runs out of juice real quick. I'm pretty sure the ipod has an operating temp like the Palms, I can't find the info right now, but I remember reading it.

Ok found the ipod info (nano), says "operate ipod in tempertaure range of 32f to 95f).

I decided to try an experiment since the comments about temperature intriqued me so I stuck my ipod touch in the fridge and promptly forgot about it, several hours later I found it there to my surprise and when I switched it on and used it all was normal including the display brightness. The case was a bit cold though! Not sure about its performance at 0F though.

Anyone want to try their's in a bucket of water?
