I would just like to start off with a personal comment on the Picks in general. From when I first started posting on NPN I have known the site as a place where photographers share their work with the main purpose of learning from each other and never have I regarded NPN as a competition nor have I ever sensed a competitive atmosphere. The Weekly Picks that are made every week and that all run for the Yearly Editor’s Pick Awards obviously does introduce a form of competition, yet I do hope (and assume) that it is not regarded as a competition as such and that people do not post images on NPN with the objective to win the EP Award. I see the Picks more as a form of encouragement and a token of appreciation of someone’s work. Each week there are also so many good posts that it is often very difficult to choose one as ‘the best’. For that reason Brad and I as Fauna Gallery moderators also do some honorable mentions each week. Herewith this week’s honorable mentions and the Pick.

Paul Marcellini just returned from a trip to Kenya and his first African post was a promising one. His image ’Watching the Sun Set’ is a simple but very effective image of two male lions in lovely soft light.

This week we had three very captivating ‘animalscapes’ in the gallery that were all candidates for this week’s pick.

Billy Fairburn’s image ’Over his Domain (+ repost)’ is a beautiful photo of a Black Rhino looking out over the vast African plains on a very moody misty early morning. This is a good example that an image whereby the subject is looking away from the viewer can work very well indeed.

Bill Dark proved to us that you do not need long focal length at all to make stunning animal photos. His post ’Boxley Valley Elk’ is an excellently composed image of two kissing Elk in a field full of yellow flowers and a backdrop of tall green trees topped with a layer of fog.

Aaron Burdick drew a lot of attention with his post ‘Clairvoyance’. This dramatic eye-catching photo features a lone Bison with a fiery sunset on a grassy Valley plain.

These are all winners in their own right, and honestly I love each and every one of them, but alas I have to pick one… and that is Billy Fairburn. Maybe I am a bit biased as an Africa photographer, but so be it.

Congrats Billy, your creative approach, eager to learn attitude and increasing skill have brought you close to the EP a few times but this week is yours!

Cheers,

:toast:
