Fresh pickings of Pikes Peak
Instead of adding to yesterday's thread, I decided to start a new thread to show these images from yesterday. I have shots similar to some that Stan posted, but since he posted them, I went with some that look at least a little bit different.

This one was actually taken shortly after noon, showing how long the clouds stayed viable for photography.

#5
Another one from that time frame with less mountain showing, and a slightly different white balance. Not sure which one WB prefer. I like 'em both.

A pano crop w/o the peak.

Great images, but #3 gets my vote for the best.

Todd,

I really like all of these, particularly #2. Great job!

I especially like #2 and #3.
Any possibility in bringing out a bit more detail in the fog - #3 ?

I'm all about #4 & #6. Most excellent!

Some stellar conditions and you captured it well. No favorite...each is very nice in its own way.

#3 is my favorite. I prefer the warmer white balance between #s 4 and 5. What a morning to be up there!

Looks like a great morning. I love #2.

Those are great, Todd! I like them all, but really love #'s 1, 2, & 3.

#6 is my favorite but all of them are excellent!

Can you make #1 and #4 come out of my camera?
Posted by Paul Wegemann on May 13, 2009 at 7:41 AM
I'm partial to #1. I like the light and the framing.

Very nice Todd. How about a vote for #2 and #5...

THese are stunning Todd. Did you get a new camera because these seem sharper and more colorful?

Nice series, your Cloudness. I like 3 & 5 the best - the mystery in 5 intrigues me. Good stuff!

where bouts on rampart range road are these, would like to explore this area! thanks!
very nice images by both Stan and yourself, love the low fog below the clear peak with red rocks...

Really like #6. Not the average composition.

Timothy, these shots were taken from several different spots along the road. The cool thing about RRR is that there are a great many places to shoot Pikes Peak, and the mountain looks very different as you move from Garden of the Gods to Woodland Park. My suggestion to everybody here would be to take a trip up on any given clear day and jot down the mileage at various viewpoints to use for reference when going up there either for sunrise or during periods of interesting weather.

2,3,4,5 are my favs and 6 would be my top fav but the foreground feels like it is cutting off the real subject which are the clouds caressing the trees, but that's just me as obviously others love it. I would like to see a clearer pano of just the clouds and trees, like in your first post, because the dappled light looks superb.
Posted by Erik Stensland on May 13, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Todd, the second one and the last one are my favorites. You are always in the right place knowing just where to be and what the weather will do. I love the way the fog wraps around the trees in that last image. It would have been fun to have done some more zoomed in abstract shots of just the trees. Would you dare to share with us just how large your collection of mountain cloud scenes is? I can only imagine it is in the tens of thousands.

Thanks for the info, didnt realize RRR went between Garden of Gods and Woodland Park, which explains why I was stumped... have driven the Woodland Park N to Westcreek portion often...
Thanks a bunch!

Tim, the Garden of the Gods end is right next to Balanced Rock. It's bumpy as hell, especially after the shooting range, a few miles up. It's a smoother ride once you get to the reservoir.
Shubarth Trail (off of RRR near Woodland Park) is also a nice spot for pano shots of Pikes Peaks north face.

Great stuff, Todd--my fav is #2. Makes me wish i had stuck around a bit longer. RRR seemed a lot bumpier to me this time, probably mainly because i was driving a low-clearance coupe instead of my ex-Jeep.

Todd...the last one and the 2nd are great!! Great collection ...love the conditions on the 4th one...!! regards, Rajeev :toast:

What's the big deal? If you've seen one stunning, spectacular Caudle image you've seen 'em all.
