I am looking for web hosting recommendations. My needs are extremely simple and basic, just somewhere to host my website that has email.

I've been using hostmonster. have had one time it was down for more than a few hrs(that I know of) in 1.5yrs. They always answer the phone and have a control panel that has a lot of useful things. Not sure if they are the best but it has been no hassle for me.

I was in the same position a few months ago. I tried one of those "unlimited everything" sites for $5 / month and was sorely disappointed. These sites over-commit their computing resources and the result is lousy and inconsistent response times / page load times. I ended up going with Media Layer LLC. It's a few dollars more per month but they actually seem to manage their capacity, don't grossly over-book and response times are consistently good. You can find their offers at www.medialayer.net. My site is at www.edgelightimages.com. Good luck!

We use a local provider named Voltz Technologies. Costs about $100 annually, and when you have an issue you can call them up and talk to a real human being.

Now, that doesn't necessarily help you, Harley, but if you have a choice of local providers you'll appreciate the level of service you get by being in the same community.

I ran across this thread on Smugmug. I've never really looked at them for webhosting but since I will probably be changing companies in the next couple of months, I am keeping my eyes open.

I also use Bluehost. Depending on the month they run between $4-6 and my site runs smoothly.

I've used host4half.com for several years with no real problems to speak of. Runs 7.95 a month gallery has a PayPal shopping cart.
www.trbphotography.com if your curious.

Don't go with midphase, there support is very poor. (48h+ before you get a response)
I'm moving away from them in favor for inmotionhosting which have received very good user reviews

Wim.
