Behind the Rocks WSA -- Moab
Moving along in my quest to capture non-iconic images from the Moab area, I decided to make a trip just outside of town to get some shots of the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study Area. This area is in the Martres book, so I am a little surprised that I haven't more images of the area. I decided to process this pano first -- mostly because I was really curious to see how it would turn out. This image is made of 10 vertical images with the 5D+ 70-200f/4L IS combo. At full resolution the amount of detail is amazing, think I could probably make a print that is about 6 feet long. I posted a larger version on FM here : http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/772495

This may help people getting to the larger version. http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/772495

That area's been a WSA for so long, they need to make it WILDERNESS already! Very cool pano shot. Can't wait to see more.

Other than that, I personally like the smaller version a bit better... There seems to be more saturation / red in the rocks / petrified dunes. I love the clouds and the layers of the image.

Excuse me, but I posted too soon. I just looked at the large version at FM. Holy cow, that is incredible! "Very cool" doesn't begin to describe it. Great job, Paul! And since well-done shots with a 5D and a good lens (like your 70-200) are capable of producing darn good 30x45s, this 10-shot pano should be capable of 300 inches in length at 45 inches high. Subtract whatever real estate you used to overlap images, and you're still talking about better than six feet I'll bet.

Thanks Jim and Todd -- I'm working on an excuse to make a giant print as we speak....
Not sure why the 2 versions look different, I used the same PSD as the original to shrink 'em down. But I'll take another look at the saturation levels and maybe give it another tweak. The clouds on my trip were awesome, I was very lucky indeed.

Very fine pano.! It's nice to see something unique from this area.

I think that it could use some local contrast enhancement, though.
Consider using the Unsharp Mask filter @ Amount-20 Radius-50 Threshold-0
and see what you think.

Good tip John -- I tried it on the little sized one and it boosted the contrast right up. I wonder if the small size is hurting the contrast, I'll have to keep that in mind when I re-size.

That is one of the coolest panos I have ever seen. Wall to wall interest, great light and textures.

This is wonderful, Paul. Thanks for posting the link to the large version.

Wow....that worked a treat!
Glad I was able to help.

Love the sky and the dappled light on the rocks. I remember scouting what looks like the same location as your shot, but didn't have near the light you did. Well done.

Thanks Guy, I think I was one of dozens of people up there -- just the only one with a tripod and on foot. The ATV and 4x4 traffic was present but not too bad. I have more from here, nothing this big

Awesome...really awesome!

Nice shot! This is one of those images that needs to be big to look good...too many details for a 700 pixel version. I was going to say the same thing as Todd. I wouldn't hesitate to print this 16 feet wide with a 10-image stitch. Only us crazy photographers would look at a 16-foot print from 2 inches away!

Oh, and Jack, if you really have to have one of them 5Ds, I've got one of them for sale.

Great image Paul. The clouds are a perfect compliment to the dramatic earth. Great subject for a nice pano.

Paul, you deserve every compliment you've gotten for this shot plus at least a few dozen more. Impeccable image - I could keep my eyes occupied with a 6' copy of this for hours on end...

Les you are too kind, let me know if you are in the market for a 6 footer
