Oily gunk getting onto the AA-filter. I don't really think this is a new problem. It has happened with every digital camera that I've owned since the 10D. It probably happened on film cameras as well, but they were self-cleaning in this respect . I currently have some oily-looking spots on my Nikon D3 that I need to clean off.
Julian, I would somehow try to get another camera body to take with you, unless you are absolutely certain (not 99 percent) that all problems with your Mk3 are resolved. I took mine to Churchill after the first recall, and I have over 5000 out-of-focus shots of polar bears as a result. I figure that Canon owe me about £20k in trip costs from when I was using the Mk3, in addition to the cost of the camera itself.
