Waterfall - Which one?
Shot this in the Smokies a couple of weeks ago. Just wondering which composition you prefer.

Thanks for any feedback

Personally I like the first one. Looks like you had a decent amount of water to work with as well. It's been sometime since I've shot this one... you've put it back in my mind!

Wade, both are great shots but there are several additional nice aspects in the first - I like depth added by the forest around the upper stream bed being visible and the touch of fog on the right is very nice.

Wade ... I like the first one also but for a slightly different reason.... I like the relative closeness of the foreground pair of timbers to the waterfall in the 1st. I don't know about you, but these trees attract my eye toward the falls. In the second shot, they have the opposite effect for me (they become an unwelcome distraction).

First, for all the reasons stated. Plus, the upper forest gives a gradation of light that is missing in the second.

Ditto to all the above. The two trees in the second are pure distraction to me as incomplete and competing entities. In the first, they have a top that helps their definition and lead you into the brighter forest beyond.

#1. Double ditto on every comment, especially the depth.

#1 again. Agree with the others, the two trees distract me in #2.

I vote for #2, just to be different.

Both are very nice, Wade, but what I like about #2 is it's simplicity and the two trees don't converge like they do in #1. So I choose #2, although I might just be playing devil's advocate too.

Nice work!

I'm going with #2 because I like the way it is more framed and focuses my attention on the waterfall. Both are very nice, but #2 I like better. #1 is a little too busy for me.

#2 is a "stronger" composition. I don't care for the forks in the tree in #1 which seems to draw your eye from the waterfall. The waterfall in #2 is smaller relative to the woods and right had rhodies and has to compete with them.

Cheers, Steve

Wade,
Nod to number 2 as well. Besides the comments above I think #2 has less highlights from the leaves than #1 does. Although in #2 they do seem more pronounced than #1 particularly just to the left of the falls and the leaves in the left foreground. Both images are nice but unless it is just my monitor I think a polarizer would have helped to put them over the top. I realize you asked which was better and not how to improve on them so my apologizes if I am providing more info than requested.
