Looks like you're back from your Artist-In-Residence sabbatical at the Grand Canyon.
How was it? Can we see the results of your work?

Hi John!

Sorry I missed your post. Phil Noll was kind enough to shoot me an email to point out that I'm a space cadet and had missed it. :jump:

It was an amazing experience to have the opportunity to live in the park for three weeks. The park staff was very supportive and eager to share their favorite spots. In addition to the park staff, the concessioners were equally supportive. They provided me access to locations that are normally off-limits and even went as far as opening Hopi House early so that I could setup the tripod without the worry of tourists bumping into me.

The weather was less than cooperative with the main problem being the wind. Of course, living in the Southwest I am all too familiar with the spring wind and its force. We had winds sustained at 35mph with gusts as high as 50mph everyday for my first week. I addition to the wind the canyon also provided a little snow, a day with near zero visibility, a few nights with clear skies, a partially cloudy evening coinciding with the full moon (it worked out perfectly) and some absolutely gorgeous weather my last week for near perfect inner-canyon backpacking.

I did a lot of hiking on both the rim and into the canyon including a multi-day trip down to Phantom Ranch. The Park Service housed me in the Trail Crew bunkhouse while I was at Phantom, which I had all to myself. While at Phantom Ranch I had the opportunity to hike up to Ribbon Falls, a beautiful waterfall that cascades in front of an alcove allowing you to stand behind it. It sounds cliche, but the colors at Ribbon Falls were unbeleivable, especially once it fell into shade and received reflected light off a nearby cliff wall. I had to desaturate the image and pull a bunch of color out of the greens. I also did some night-sky photography which I'll be posting on ES&S tonight. I'll provide a link as soon as the image is posted.

I still have an enormous amount of work to filter though, but you are welcome to view my current selection of Grand Canyon images on my website at: AdamSchallau.com

Unbelievable portfolio. Were all of the images in your Grand Canyon smugmug collection taken during this experience?

Thanks, Jesse. No, there are a few in there from May 2008. I'm would like to keep the A.I.R. images separate from my previous Grand Canyon images, but I haven't found a good way to do it yet. The shots with the rainbow and the couple with the stormy skies are all from May 2008.
