EOS 50D and TC-80N3 Controller Combo Doesn’t Work :
I have a new EOS 50D and wanted to use a holdover from my EOS D60 days – the Canon TC-80N3 Remote Controller.
Now I hadn't used the TC80N3 in 2-3 years – and it doesn't work with either camera!
The TC80N3 connects to the EOS 50D just fine. The lithium CR2032 battery seems OK as I get normal displays. I also removed, cleaned, and properly reinserted said battery. After setting the self-timer mode to 25 seconds (as a test) – I set the 50D to single frame (1-shot) with Auto Focus on.
Finally, I pressed the TC80N3 release button and it activated the 50D shutter immediately -- no self-timer delay. In a low-light situation it will even activate the camera’s popup flash.
As it’s been a while since I used the controller, I’m wondering if I missed anything operational along the way – with both cameras. Should I use a certain 50D (and D60) Basic and Creative Zone setting? I'm at a loss.
Any ideas directly -- or possible referrals to a solution?
Sounds like you pressed the big grey button rather than the start button. The big grey button is just an alternate shutter release button, hence the behavior to activate the shutter immediately. Try pressing the start button once you've set up the parameters on the TC80N3 timer. Should work just fine.

It should work fine, I concur with Keith's assessment. I've been using the combo for a while now.
All I can say is DUHHH! The answer was staring me in the face.
To me the "big grey button" said only one thing to me -- START. The power of assuming (wrongly)-- wow! Last time I used this -- 2-3 years ago -- I saw the smaller "Start/Stop button plain as day.
