Smooth Snake
I am just back from a few days field work in Dorset. Smooth snakes featured very strongly in this work, 8 animals in 10 metres at one site. I find photographing these animals about as easy as juggling soot. Unlike grass snakes and adders, where an individual will sometimes sit for a bit and allow a close approach, these guys are off like rockets as soon as you find them.

I was therefore very pleased when this one hung around for a bit. This is virtually full frame with my 150mm Sigma. Not a perfect picture by any means, but another step closer to what I want.

Hi David

The image is a little busy, that said still a nice close-up of this rare snake!

Hello, It's a nice portrait of this snake. I know you can not do much about the environment but there are to many things that take the attention away from the snake imo.
But I'm still jealous because I've never seen such a snake.

very nice portrait of what sounds to be a difficult animal, interesting to see the new shoots of heather here too
