I have done very little to this shot, I thought the back ground noise gave it a sort of arty pastel ish drawing look, the sun had just started to come over the horizon and hit it from the left side giving such rich colours, but I might try reducing the saturation, I was hand holding this and was amazed to get such sharp results, at such a low shutter speed and at 500mm.
Hi Steve, I have been unable to see the kingfishers so far this year, as the lake was cordend off because of nesting birds right next to the path. Most of the bushes in front of the hide were cut down late last year giving much better access to the lake area.
I am going down tomorrow to see if I can get new kingfisher perches put in, as their first brood will around by now and looking for easy food, the grey wagtails will be hatching soon too as the mayflies have just started to hatch.
More good news is the water voles are doing well, last year I had them coming to within 12 inches of me to be photographed, spured on by a visitor saying my pictures were all down to my big white lens, so out I went with the 24-105mm to prove him wrong, even took some with my mobile phone incase that wasn't enough.
Got my front focusing 1d3 fixed with canons recent AF fix offer, I am very pleased so far with it but need to give it a good run. I'll let you know how I get on with the kingfishers, so you can pop in when your passing.
Hello, I like the picture very much. It's just like you said, it looks like a painting from the old days.
The only disturbing thing in this picture I think is the line just above the bird following the contour of the bird from almost head to the tail. Maybe it's my screen.Or may be due to oversharpening?
Great shot anyway.

BTW If I am correct, how are the kingfishers on the 'Base'? We met as I was leaving about a year ago

Will be up next week for a couple of weeks, so if there is any news perhaps you could let me know via email.
Thanks for the update & glad you are happy with the 1D now.
Cheers
