Hello Sandy, I cannot answer your question, but like Dan I did want to welcome you to the CANP regional forum too. I recall your very fine images posted here at NPN from the PNW area in the past and we will look forward to your future posts & comments as well.
A few of the areas I'm familiar with along the Peninsula have Tern colonies. I've yet to visit them this year but Terns seem to nest in these areas annually. I think perhaps the best photographically is Radio Road in Redwood Shores. Shoreline Lake in Mountain View seems to always have large colonies, but they are usually quite far out of site. The island in Shoreline Lake sometimes has some, but you'd need to rent a kayak or boat to get close enough. The bay just east of the lake usually has hundreds if not thousands, but getting close enough for a photo is nearly impossible.
For what its worth, because its difficult to visit every area even in a single nesting season, I usually follow the local birding lists to get reports of rarities as well as a general idea of hot spots (http://www.sialia.com/s/calists.pl?rm=all_lists.
Thanks for the welcome! I lived in Lafayette for 10 years before my 15 in Oregon, and am happily back here now, close to family and friends again. I added a bit about me to your "CNP members" thread a short while ago.
