My wife and I are traveling west this year and won the Wave lottery for June 27. I would appreciate any suggestions as to the best time of day at that time of the year to photograph. I understand that the second wave is best shortly before sundown, but I'm wondering about the wave, itself. Also, I'm not sure my non-photographer can last until the end of the day, if we begin our hike early in the morning.
Any help will be appreciated. I enjoy visiting this site and marveling at the great photography. I hope to make a few more posts seeking info before we leave on June 17th.
Thanks in advance. We're from the "old" mountains back East. You can check out some of my photos at www.vanslider.com. Constuctive criticism is always welcomed. I'm still learning and intend to do so the rest of my days.
Mid-morning to the middle of the day is best for the Wave itself, so you get the fewest shadows.
The 'second wave' does looks its best an hour or so before sundown.
This will give you time to get back to your vehicle without using a flashlight (bring one along regardless).

This can be cause for great concern, as you'll be there during one of the hottest times of the year. If there's any doubt in your mind, you may want to reconsider. Hiking out in the mid-afternoon can be a brutal and blazing experience, and the desert sun at this altitude is absolutely merciless in the summer! There is virtually no shade along this route.
There's good reason why permits are easy to score during this time of year.
Be sure to bring plenty of water (2 qts. apiece minimum), and consider stashing some along the way for the return hike. A GPS unit and a first aid kit wouldn't hurt to pack along, either. Cell phone service is nonexistent. Be prepared!!

Best of luck to you both.
