One of my favourite birds, but one that spends about 60% of it's time below the surface. This one was foraging for it's chicks and as I was well hidden, came quite close.
Shot taken yesterday in harsh light - shame the reserve doesn't open earlier !
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture: f/8.0
Focal Length: 700 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: -1/3 EV
RAW processed in DPP, then curves, NN and Sat in CS3.
Now this look better Graham. There seems to be more detail in this one, but the Duck weed (?) looks a bit muted now. Would be tempted to clone the reed l/h side, but nice POV
Cheers guys - am getting to grips with layers now and have about 5 attempts to get this one right......I wanted the bird to pop without retaining all of the harsh light on the original. Agree re the reed, but didn't see it at the time of processing...

Agrre with nits already mentioned plus you've oversharpened it a wee bit - sharpening halo around the underside of the head and beak
Try de-saturating the reds and uping the saturation in the greens on your full rez tiff
Nice shot that can look even nicer with a bit more processing
