I have a copy of CS3 Extended, but I'm not interested in the "extended" portion. The latest ACR updates, which I need, only work with CS4. There is an upgrade to CS4 available from Adobe for $199. The upgrade to CS4 Extended is more $$$. I was wondering if the CS4 upgrade can be used with my CS3 Extended? What do you think?
I would give Adobe a call and see what they say. I have not gone down the path you are tyring to do so I can not comment further. Hopefully, it will work out for you!!
I think you can do the upgrade you plan to but you will need to call Adobe. They are pretty good about being willing to take your money but as you saw on their website, this is not a standard upgrade path so they don't list it.
Offhand, I don't know what will happen if you do upgrade to CS4 and then in two years, decide to upgrade the entire suite. It would be a question for Adobe.
Yes, CS3 Extended will upgrade to CS4, unfortunately for the same cost at CS3 Standard, $199.99. You can see all the upgrade paths here. Interestingly, there's a footnote on that webpage (just noticed after I posted this reply) that says "You must contact Adobe Sales at 800-585-0774 for this upgrade."
Wonder why...
Anyway, once you upgrade, your Adobe account will list CS4 in the Licensing section as a normal version, not just an upgrade, so it will be fine for the next version if you need CS5.
BTW, the upgrade is $189 at Amazon w/free shipping. I wonder if Adobe lets you use a commercially-purchased upgrade. Post back when done, it'd be interesting to know what they say.
Well, I did call Adobe, but before I read Paul's post. The gentleman I spoke to said the CS4 upgrade would not work with CS3 Extended. (I did not call them in the beginning because I figured even if it would work, they would not be allowed to acknowledge that.) When I asked if there was any other good solution (meaning frugal), he replied there was not.
I will check out Paul's upgrade paths link and see what I might do next.
Paul, after checking out the link you provided, I see my mistake. I figured my question should be directed to the tech support group, and that is who I called. The small note at the bottom of your linked page says you must call the Sales Dept to get this upgrade. I guess they must know have more knowledge than the support group.
I will check with Sales later today. Thanks for the link.

Funny Ken, I called the standard 800 number at first also, then I noticed the Sales number also. Anyway, out of curiosity, I called, and the fella told me that if you have CS3 Extended NOT part of a suite like the production premium suite, but just standalone Photoshop and you want to downgrade to Standard CS4 from Extended CS3, you do have to call them so they can reconfigure the license, plus they will send the media to you. I would insist on a $10 discount since that's the discount that the CS4 Upgrade goes for online. And free shipping just like Amazon would give you.
He also said that if you do have Photoshop as part of one of the suites, you'll need to do a suite upgrade. That makes sense, why lose all the other great programs, right?

You know, I may call tomorrow too (anonymously) and press 'em, just to see what they say.

OK, I'd better get back to work! Have a good one!
