I am traveling to Denver this week. I will have Thursday the 28th open for sunrise and some shooting till noon. Any suggestions would be very helpful. I have not selected a place to stay yet some I am fairly flexible.
Chautauqua Park on the edge of Boulder is a great place for a sunrise shoot. Flowers are in bloom and it's as green as it will ever get right now. Roxborough is nice, but the park doesn't open until 8:00.
Red Rocks park is pretty, but challenging shooting.
I'd vote for Chautauqua, particularly if you're new to the area.
Chautauqua is a pretty good bet, one of my favorite close spots. If you are interested in some cityscape shots, City Park is a good place to be. One possible location would be the lake near the museum another would be on the golf course. Obviously you'd have to find the best combination of city and mountains in the background.
As mentioned above, Chautauqua is a great location close to town. I also really love the Sawhill Ponds in Boulder. Water, Flatirons, birds, occassional fog, and no crowds. On spring mornings, I've often been able to get good shots of hot-air balloons flying overhead. You can pretty much count on that on the weekend, not sure how often they fly during the week.
I also would recommend Chautauqua, and Brent's suggestion of Sawhill Ponds (East of Boulder) is a good one too. Chautauqua will give you classic Boulder vista and wildflowers, Sawhill Ponds will give you water, peaks in the distance, and wildlife. Another place in Boulder is "Settler's Park", accessed from Canyon Blvd on the West side of town. This is a short hike to a smallish outcrop of red rocks, but with the grass greened up now, this can be nice at sunrise!.
Looks like you're getting suggestions for the North end of town, perhaps someone will chime in with other locations too!.
Has anyone mentioned Chautauqua? Take Baseline Rd. west from Hwy-36, drive through neighborhood and you'll soon see a sign to turn left, which, in Boulder, is about the only way people turn.
Sounds like everyone here is pushing Boulder. It's not bad but... If I make it that far north (from Denver) I usually opt to keep going, and make it up to Rocky. Plenty of sunrise opportunities there and the man you want to corner about that is Erik Stensland. And a stop at his gallery will be all the inspiration you need
Randy, Mount Evans is definitely my first choice for sure. Sunrise from the top of a fourteen thousand foot peak why not? You drive to almost the summit then walk about 5 minutes the views are incredible. If you have any questions drop me a line.
