Aspens in Fall

This is way early but I just got accepted to an art show in late September the 26 and 27th in Lincoln NE, a five hour drive towards Colorado from my home. I want to make an attempt at catching the aspens turning yellow either the week before or the week after.

For you locals, on average-would I be better off the week before the show or the week after? I have no exact destinations North or South at this time but the iconic Maroon Bells is one option. I'll only have a few days in the area and this will most likely be a scouting trip with the hopes of coming home with a couple of nice images.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Hey Rob, I think if you concentrated on the week after, you'd have more options. The Bells should be going pretty good by then, and if you wanted to head over McClure Pass and on to the San Juans, I think later is better than earlier. Inevitably, someone will see a tree turn in early-September and scream "It's gonna be early this year!," but the historical averages weigh a little in favor of after the 26th/27th for peak color. Having said that, the dates of your show are smack dab in the middle of the aspen color season, so you would still find plenty to shoot before. It's really a no-lose situation.
