Between work and house painting, photography time has been very limited, but its still fun to cart the camera around. Hopefully I'll have all of this behind me in a few days and my summer will free up from now until September. I'm working on the basics of composition and color theory. Ute Valley park is just down the street from my house and its a useful place to practice. All of this series was shot around or after sunset in deep shade, so there is some blue in the images intentionally. They were all shot with my LX3.
This first image the swirling patterns in the sandstone caught my eye and the lichen provides a second subject.
A little ways away this panel of lichen provided a great array of colors. I liked the balance between the orange, blue and turquoise lichens here. I thought it produced a sort of starry night effect.
I'm not sure what this shrub is, but I've got one in my yard too. If anyone knows what it is called I'd be grateful for that information. It looks nice for a couple days in spring then fades into the background.
On this one I was playing with the color contrast between the warm and cool tones in the background, their curved border and the position of the flowers.
I liked the curve of the stream banks on this one and the division between the two banks. It came out much darker than I had intended. I still need to address my editing monitor, but its pretty low on the list of priorities right now. Hopefully the darkness is not too much distraction.
I like the 4th one a bunch, but all of them are very, very blue. I assume these were taken under open sky, but the color cast is to the detriment of the images.

Playing around with the contrast between warm and cool green tones and the diagonal divisions created through the frame.
