Sorry I haven't been to the forum lately primarily due to my work pressure and my newborn 5 months old. I miss the wonderful work here and ESS. Spend some time in the Sierras last week. Decided to do morning shoot of this place but not a single hint of cloud anywhere. they did appear later in the day and moved quickly before sun down but do you always need a dramatic sky to shoot a landscape ? maybe yes, maybe no. i don't know the answer but I would be interested to know your thoughts here.

As usual, comments and critiques welcome.

thanks,
deb

ahh snow.. make me wanna get up into it and play! What elevation was this? The blues on the LRC rock seem a bit strong - in fact, the blue throughout the image is giving it a more 2D feel than I think it could have.

Yeah, I like this image overall. The composition and view are both really nice. I always like the look of thawing lakes and those rocks really add to the scene as well. I don't thing you always need clouds. Where in the Sierras was this anyway?

There are a couple of tweaks which I think would help this one look better. First in looking at the lake and water line there appears to be a right tilt. Second I agree with Floris on the white balance. The blue cast is too strong. It is almost looks like a black and blue image. I can't see any other colors. So I would try balancing that out a bit more.

You have a lot of good diagonal lines throughout and as well
as nice texture in the foreground rocks. I agree with the
previous comments about the blue.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Though I had a cooler white balance to bring out the cold feeling, I think I messed up with the processing and also the conversion to web in ps added a double proof. i will reprocess this will the blues desaturated.

Derek, this is over the tioga pass towards the east entrance.

Deb,

Nice to see an image from you. I like this. Must be Ellery Lake just before 120 drops down the canyon? This is a bit blue, but not overly so. I'm really liking the graphic nature of the foreground rocks and am actually wishing for more. Still, a nicely composed and balanced image.

Must have been nice being able to drive up there while there is still some ice and snow.

Deb,

WOW, I loved it. Sky can be enhanced in Photoshop.

Did you get any abstract image as well?

Very impressive composition here, Deb. I'm sure you can try varieties on the blue channel content to your overall liking, but I would sure work on that to see what might come about.

Man I can't wait to get back into the Sierra... especially after seeing an image like this. The composition lends itself to some really nice lines and shapes. The blue tones and empty sky work for me as presented. I do wish there was a little more separation in the fg rocks of this web version. Although the details are probably much greater in a larger version. Nice work!

Very nice Debjit! I like the cooler white balance, but as others mentioned wouldn't mind seeing the blues toned down a teeny bit. Really like the comp with the sweeping foreground.
