Just a quick note to mention I will be on a trip to Capitol Reef NP area all next week. I leave on Sunday and will not be returning until the next Sunday if all goes according to plan.
Additionally, if there are any CANP folks or NPN folks that are in the area of Capitol Reef next week I will be driving a 2005 silver/green Ford Escape. Please flag me down I would really like to meet you and to say hello in person.
If you do need any CANP site assistance during my abscence please contact Preston or Jim. I know both are very busy right now, but if help is needed I'm sure they can assist as time allows them to.
Wishing you well in Capitol Reef NP, Paul. I was there in late April
and had a good time. At this time of the year carrying insect
repellant might be advisable.
Hmmmm.....good point, Robert. I'm one who has never met an insect that did not bite me. In fact, I've had times where I thought I'd bleed out before I ever made it to the safety of a vehicle.
Of course the time the bats swarmed my SUV out at JTNP was another event all together. Although they seem to dodge the metal and glass areas, they had trouble with my radio antenna which would give off a nice "twang" when the little guys struck it. I guess their small antenni just could not pick up the antenna sticking up in the air, as it were.
Good luck and have fun. A little secret about insects. They hate the smell of vitamin B. Yeah Vitamin B. Go to the store and buy a bottle of the best quality viatmin B complex that you can. I buy Solgar brand. Take about 200 - 300 mg about 1/2 hour before you go out. You can take up to 400 - 500mg a day for about 10 days without any adverse effect. Vitamin B is water soluable and you'll pee bright yellow as long as you take it, but bugs hate it. I have yet to be bitten by a mosquito since I started to use it. I got the tip from a Naturopathic Doctor a few years ago that took one of my workshops. We were in Carrizo Plain and the bugs were rampant. She offered all of us some vitamin B complex, and I was amazed. A month later I tried it again in the Santa Cruz mountains along the creeks that run through canyons. Normally I would have been eaten alive. I tested it by sticking my bare arm out and waiting. Dozens of mosquitos tried to land, only two did and I just watched them sit on my arm and refuse to bite.
Youssef, thank you very much for the tip. Gosh, I wonder if that is something my brother has been taking. He is a fly-fisherman and bugs never bother him. Where as I usually require major surgery after my outings to repair life-threatening leaking holes. As my brother and I argued out in the field about the issue I told him it was just his rotten breath that kept bugs at bay.
One thing I'll say about the Capitol Reef area in May. There be a lotta eenee teenee black flies that are far more persistent than mosquitos. One of my favorite places Paul, have a terific week.
