Is there a place to go on the web to find reliable reviews of workshops? I have looked around on this site but not found one, but then my wife would have something to say about my ability to find things!

Not that I know of. I've always found it useful to simply Google a name followed by "review" or "opinion". I cannot say I've done this for workshop instructors, but I have done this plenty for products and other services. You can also review client testimonials (if the instructor provides them on his/her site) and email the client for additional information.
