Just got the email! Here's the link. I'm going to install it now, will report back.
========================================= UPDATE:
OK, the firmware took 2 minutes flat to load, real easy, right off my CF card.
The manual mode works GREAT! Once in LiveView:
1) Hit the ISO button to set it (shows up right on the big LCD). This is great, because we ALWAYS want ISO below 1000 unless you want the grain.
2) Index-finger wheel sets the shutter speed
3) Wheel on back sets the aperture.
Done! We're going to wonder how we ever DIDN'T have manual control before... lol.
OK Canon, add 24p (and 25p for our overseas friends), and the competition is buried.
I installed it last night with no problems. Just did a quick test video and it seems to work fine. Hopefully I can play with it some more this weekend.
Awesome, I loaded it up last night, and did a few video tests, it works great. Way to go Canon! Thanks for the heads up Paul, I wouldn't have heard about this for a while if you hadn't posted.
I've been trying to install this. Can download it, but once extracted can't locate it. Doesn't show up where it is supposed to be. When tried to extract to c:\ got error message io::fork exception cannot create 5
help!
Greg, Windows is probably complaining because you're trying to put it on the root of the C drive (Vista is especially cranky about that, at times). Double-click the eos5d2110.exe file again, and when the window pops up for the location, just click the Browse button and pick a safe spot like My Documents. The extraction is QUICK, less than a second, so it'll seem like nothing happened (Ed. Note: why is it even an EXE file? Why didn't Canon just post the firmware file to download? It isn't BIGGER than the EXE!).
The file you're looking for is 5d200110.fir. Do these steps for the cleanest and quickest update:
*Format your CF card in the 5D2
*Pop the CF card into your PC reader
*Copy the 5d200110.fir file to the CF card (not in any folders)
*Put the CF card back into the 5D2 and go find the firmware section on the camera's menus, and from there the update is easy. It takes about 2 minutes to run.
Write back if anything doesn't work!
PS: You downloaded the Windows version, not the Mac version, correct?

The answer probably is consistency and process control across everything they release. Releasing the same way as an EXE for all of these things means they are less likely to have issues or make mistakes which saves them money in the long run. Having someone determine what form to release in and how efficient it would be to zip it or create an exe is pointless when the size difference isn't prohibitive.
Paul,
thanks for answering - weirdest thing. No matter where I put it, documents, program files, I can't find it with explorer and when I try to do it again, it says file already exists. Yes, I did windows file...I can live without this, but now it bugs me!! don't have a card reader, so need to do it via computer. Any ideas?

Greg, how much you wanna bet that Windows thinks it's a system file, and therefore is hiding it... do this:
*Open windows explorer and go up to the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
*A form will pop up... click on the View tab (probably the 2nd tab on that form), and look for the item in the list that says Show hidden files an folders. Make sure that's selected. I also like to uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. Let's face it, on a PC, we need to see the .exe and.doc and .jpg, etc.
*Click OK to save your changes. I bet you see the file now!
As far as not having a card reader, the Canon EOS Utility can also handle the upgrade. I haven't used that, but there are full instructions on the Canon page where you downloaded the firmware update.
Paul,
Well, wonder of wonders. I already had the hidden files checked and it didn't show up, but all of a sudden I see "compatibility files" show up click that then changes from program files... to virtual store. Anyway, it was there. but still couldn't open it. So connected camera and started eos utility and followed steps and then it recognized the file. Weird. Anyway, it's done, it works. While I;m at it, I have done minimal movie so far, but seems the AF doesn't adjust while recording? Is this correct? I can set af before pushing the live view/movie button but then when record it stays there.
Thanks for all your help Canon's only suggestion was to send the camera to their factory to have the firmware installed....
Greg
Great! Glad it worked out! Strange one, for sure, but it's done.
Auto-focus is klunky at best in movie mode... it's probably best to do like the real video cam guys do: focus manually. However, check out this article on Canon's Digital Learning Center site, it may offer some insight.

I agree about ISO. If it's going over 1000, let me do something else to fix it.
(for those confused, we're talking about the movie mode)
Thanks again.
