Just came across this article and wanted to share it with group. Three chances to visit a National Park for free this summer. In case some folks didn't already know, National Parks are nice places to take nature photographs.
Sweet - what a great idea to foster support for these places.
A better choice, though, is to come visit Wrangell - St. Elias National Park, in Alaska. It's free all year round! One of many reasons why it's the greatest National Park in the whole wide world!!!
Quit saying that Carl - you're making me jealous ever since I missed my chance to go to Gakona a couple of years ago....the 1 time I was really looking forward to travelling for work!!
But that's a neat idea with the free weekends, although I think the bigger benefit isn't that it's free - the cost is pretty affordable for most people as is. I think the marketing aspect is probably a bigger deal. News stories are good publicity.
Too bad they don't include the national forests in this because there are more of those a little closer to me. I was planning on going to the mt hood area sometime this summer.
My suggestion is to mark these days in your calendar as days that you should avoid the national parks. I live in Estes Park right at the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. From my experience with free days, they are so incredibly busy that the everything comes to a complete stop. These are days when you might as well go to the shopping mall to enjoy some peace and quiet.
