Today was hot and uncomfortable. Period. So good day to venture into the mountains for some waterfall hunting. Actually today was more just pre-scouting a couple remaining possible locations for my next workshop. BUT...all this heat also pushed every single stream feeding from high up in the cascades to the breaking point. I don't think I've ever seen so much water coming down the mountains along Highway 20. The Skagit itself wasn't running too high, but Ross Lake is getting close to full, so they'll have to open the spillways soon.

This is Gorge Creek Falls, running way WAY higher than I'd ever seen it before. Like shaking the bridge high (and the bridge is about 700 feet away from the falls and 150 feet above the creek), shaking so much I had to bump the ISO up to 320 and shoot at a less than optimal aperture to even get the shot, so its not as sharp as I'd like, but in my book atmosphere at the expense of sharpness is a perfectly acceptable (if not mandatory) trade off.

40D, 1/50th @ 6.3, 168mm 320 ISO

Yeah! I agree on your compromise about sharpness vs. atmosphere. This is a great example of the compromise toward the more atmospheric and to me really portrays the action, power and wildness of raging rivers and falls. Nice going!
