Breaking the Rules
Contrasty sunlight and wind greeted our group on a recent trip to Bowers Hollow. A great spot but not the ideal conditions for photography, but I was there and had my camera, so I had to at least take a few photos. I have been experimenting with this shot to see if I could make lemonade out of lemons.

Here are a few things that I did. Blended four shots together and then applied a mild Orton Effect to tone down the harsh contrast. I also dodged and burned a few areas.

I am not sure it works and your opinions are appreciated.

Looks pretty good to me. You did a great job with the color. Is that shadows on the falls?

The thing that strikes me is the detail in the rocks in BEHIND the falls!! I also would like it better with some more of the foreground scene cropped out. Even so I love the shot, it gives me a dream-like feeling that has some punch.

Not bad considering everything Tom. I like your idea with the Orton effect. Looks a lot like the one I worked up a few days ago.

Nice artistic and dreamy photo Tom.

Nice job making a silk purse out of a sow's ear Tom. The post processing has a unique and pleasing feel. I like the idea of cropping up from the bottom, maybe to just above the gray rock at right. Good work.

Tom,
Orton doesn't usually do a lot for me but I really like this one.
Has a canvas look to it.

I like it Tom..The Orton definitely lends to it...I agree with Wayne on cropping the gray rock at the very bottom out. I had the same situation this weekend at Collins Creek..It was sunny, but I couldn't help it...I still had to shoot!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Ed, yes there are some shadows from the surrounding trees on the falls, I left it that way to see how the effect was recieved.

Here is a cropped version, I agree, I think it helps the overall feel of this shot.

Wow! What a difference a crop makes. The falls really become the center of attention.

Yep...Very nice...A crop can make all the difference!

I really like the cropped version of this shot, as someone mentioned it has a dreamy feeling to it.

Very pretty Tom. Count me in if you ever want to hike in again on a cloudy day.

You really did well with this, Tom. The cropped version is fantastic! Who says it has to be cloudy for good waterfall shots?
