Pileated Woodpecker-Male
Found a nesting pair Saturday morning at Felsenthal NWR - 06-06-09. Female was checking out one of the holes used earlier by Wood Ducks.

40D, 500mm + stacked 1.4 + 2.0 tcs, f/13, 1/250, ISO 500, flash-fill, cropped. Image a little soft as bird was 100 yards away.

Another, closer view. Clipped some of the tail on this one.

Excellent again Daniel. Nicely exposed and processed, great detail.

I reposted the pale purple coneflower, see if you like it better now?

My expertise on birds is minimal. Perhaps the Avian gallery could offer you better critiques.

It's nice to see a photo of one of these. The first and only time I've seen one I was driving a back road near Topeka, KS. I didn't know they existed at the time and was amazed by it's prominent head/beak and stark coloration. I'd love to get one in my sites again now that I have at least a reasonable setup to capture one. Thanks for sharing Daniel.
