Moon in the windmill
I made a short trip to Big Basin NNL Saturday evening. The high winds made shooting much hard, and I ended up leaving early instead of staying out under the full moon all night. While trying to come up with something to shoot, I saw this scene. I put on my new 580EXII flash, and attempted to capture the moon and the windmill together after sunset. Does the concept work? Any other C&C would be appreciated. 50D, 1/20, f/8,ISO 1600, flash.

Great imagination. I like the photo, just wonder how many folks will ask how you got the moon to show through the windmill blades as they don't appear to be moving?

If you look at the edge with the moon, you can see the blur from the blades. I'm assuming it is the flash that creates the illusion of no movement in the rest of the scene. Trust me, the blades were flying right along in the high winds.

Semi-transparent windmill . . . interesting effect. You have a good eye and imagination. Keep pushing the envelope.

Nice work, Rob, great use of the moon and windmill.

Very creative concept Rob, and I like the results too. This shot challenges the viewer to decide if it's "fact or fiction". And on a side note, I didn't know someone was still manufacturing windmills, interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Good eye to see this and the potential in it. I really like the concept. The only thing I'm not sure what to make of is the clouds around the moon. That is probably a good thing though, it keeps me looking at the picture and thinking about it.

Thanks folks. Wayne, I suspect this windmill has seen many years of use. Scott, I think the brightness in the clouds balances the brighter blades. I printed this at Walmart tonight, and am surprised how well it actually printed.
