What is a good software package to keep track of photos? I'm getting more photos and it is getting hard to keep track of them. I'd like a program were I can track my photos by subject, location.
Adobe Lightroom is great and Portfolio is my 2nd pick. If you already have your metadata in place then its plug and play with Portfolio with Lightroom your going to have to go to school a little to get the hang of it. Lightroom is well worth the effort and the expense.
Picasa is a nice browser but the data system is proprietary. They can be used only within Picasa, not other software. Lightroom, Aperture and (I believe) ACDSee all write data to EXIF and/or IPTC which can be used from other software. If you ever want to change your cataloging software in the future choose software that uses a common data system unless you enjoy retyping it all of course.
I started out with iView MediaPro. iView was purchased by Microsoft and now sold as Microsoft Expression Media 2. I now use that. Very powerful, flexible tool that can catalog a lot more than just photographs.

I've been using ACDSee Pro 2 for a short time and so far it does everything I've been looking for at a very reasonable price
