So I have a Nikkor 400mm 2.8 AFS II and a 500mm 4 AFS VR and I’m looking for a little advice. I really hate to sell the 400mm but at this point it’s collecting dust. The 500mm combined with the D3 and its ability to shoot in low light makes me want to sell the 400mm. Plus the 400mm weighs a ton. The 400mm is in great shape with some light scuffing but for the most part really clean. I’m the original buyer and only owner. What would you do and how much do you think I can get for the 400mm?

Looking on eBay I saw one (AF-I) sell for $4500 and another (AFS) sell for $5500. I would sell it if you aren't using it. It's a lot of money tied up. Summer is the time to sell these things as demand is higher. My own thinking has evolved to if I haven't used something over the previous year, sell it and put the money into something I will use. It's just dead money sitting around.

I think it depends how likely you are to want to use it in the next while, and if it is the only tool that can accomplish what you need it for. Sounds to me like the 500 is accomplishing enough that you could get by using it instead of the 400mm...I think I would sell it too.

Look on FredMiranda forum under buy and sell to check prices, and if you want, to sell it. Or you could list it on Craigslist. I just sold a D300 there.

I know a guy in Nigeria that will offer you more than it's worth if you post it on craigslist. It's for his son's birthday, and he'll take care of extra shipping if you deal with his paypal account.

Seriously though...if you aren't using it, that's a ton of $ tied up if the 500 is your primary lens...
