I found this a particularly interesting week to be monitoring the images in the Fauna Gallery - not only did we have the "usual" number of great images, but also we had a lot of images of less familiar subjects. My final short list of two images to choose between for the Pick of the Week demonstrates this: it came down to a "battle of the turtles".
Charlie VanTassel gave us a fantastic series of underwater images of green turtles shot using natural light. While all 3 of Charlie's posted images were great, I found "Green Sea Turtle", with its beautiful colour palette and clarity, particularly stunning. It was the first runner-up as Pick of the Week. If you take the time to check this image out, make sure you look at the larger version - it's just great!
But Michael VanBeber also came through with an incredibly interesting turtle shot. His "The Art of Turtle Zen" is a close-up of a turtle like you've never seen one before. Between its unusual perspective, simple composition, and technical excellence, I decided that it should be given the honour of Pick of the Week. Congratulations, Michael.
There's a few other honourable mentions that I'd encourage you to check out. Jeffrey Sipress' "Gracious Grizzlie" (sic) is a simple yet very elegant portrait of a grizzly from the Khutzeymateen Inlet of BC, Canada. Pat Sampson posted an absolutely darling shot of a young fox (entitled "Kit Fox Pup") that had a beautiful softness to it - it's definitely worth checking out. And, if you're looking for something a tad out of the ordinary, you should definitely check out Paul Marcellini's "Masai Giraffe" - I'm pretty sure you won't have seen a giraffe shot like this before!
Cheers...and thanks to all who spent time in, posted images in, or commented on images in, the Fauna Gallery during the past week.
Brad
PS: And a special thanks is extended to all of you who took the time to place your eyeballs and/or comments on my swimming grizzly shot- I appreciate your feedback (even you Billy!).
