Just upgraded to a Canon 50D this weekend. Had been using a 40D and shooting in RAW 99% of the time. Process with LR2 and/or PSE 6.0 on my Toshiba laptop. Went to Adobe and downloaded CameraRaw 5.3, but when I connect my card reader to the computer, it takes the usual time to download the photos but then no image is seen..message of "file not supported"(both with LR downloader and PSE downloader) I tried some JPEG shots and those download just fine. What do I need to do to get my RAW images into the computer?

Brian - It sounds to me like you're downloading the files OK, but it can't read the embedded image in the RAW file. I'm thinking that the file is there, but corrupted or the format isn't understood.

Can you still open the files for processing? Have you looked in the appropriate directory you're downloading to to see if the file is there?

If the file is there on the computer and you can't open it or see the preview, there could be a couple of possibilities. Are you certain LR2 is up to date? It may be possible that the files are corrupted as well.

Is the Canon 50D a brand new camera? I can't speak for LR2, but I know over on Aperture on the Mac side there's frequently a lag between when the new cameras come out and when RAW converters for Aperture are available. Adobe is usually faster than Apple at posting the conversion routines. As a bridge, you might try Adobe DNG Converter; it's usually the first application to support new cameras, although the quality of its conversions is sometimes criticized.

Here's a possible fix from Adobe concerning your RAW files in PSE 6.

You'll need Lightroom v.2.1 to open 50D RAW files.

As new cameras are released, software manufacturers need to put out updates to support the proprietary raw file formats of the new models. This applies to all cameras and all software with regard to raw files. JPG, TIF etc. are standards; that's why you can see those.

It's really worthwhile to stay current with your photo/imaging software; whatever flavor you prefer.

Brian, I have PSE6 with the latest ACR (5.3) on my PC at work (just to have something to open my 5D2 RAW files while at work), and it works. Since the 50D was released at the same time as the 5D2, your PSE6 setup should work, so keep tweaking (meaning, it isn't a losing battle, PE6 & 7 with ACR 5.3 will work with the 50D, it works with my 5D2). Make sure the Camera Raw.8bi file is in the right place, etc.

In a pinch, why not try installing the Canon DPP software to process your RAW files, and save them out to something that LR understands (TIFF? DNG?). I don't use LR or DPP, but DPP should work.
