Luna Moth
I simply stopped and looked across a patch of woods and spotted this off colored object in the distance. It's been a while since I've seen one. I forgot that they only fly in the dark, so I started about five feet away and would take a few shots, inch forward to shoot more. I was using 105mm macro and got about 10 inches from the moth. It never moved.

It was 102 degrees heat index and the moth had a "shady" spot. Yes, I needed to get out and shoot something, even though it was 2:30pm and very hot. Sometimes you just have to grab the camera and get out rain or shine.

And here is one from ten inches away and I did crop this for framing purposes. I loved his face and antennas. Kinda scary up close. Very hairy.

at 102 heat index I wouldn't be trying to move much either. Cool find, you have been finding a lot of neat stuff lately.

Sounds like a fun little adventure Mike. I would love to get a chance to photograph one of these for an extended period of time. Thanks for sharing.
