Every evening we are visited by three hedgehogs, all eager for a share of the dog meat and cat biscuits that we put out just before sunset. The individual in this shot, with a pale stripe between the eyes, is always the first to arrive. Their manners are not good. Each new arrival is greeted with grunting and a few attempts to bite the ears, but eventually they settle down and all will eat together from the same bowl.
For ages I have been saying that I must photograph them, and eventually I started the night before last. Keeping a decent growth of clover for them to move through is, of course, a very good excuse not to mow the lawn.
