Small pearl Bordered Fritillaries at rest.
Been writing a short paper on the roosting habits of these in the forest here. It is apparent here anyway, that the vast majority roost on the flower heads of Juncus Gonglomeratus( Common Rush ) They don't look like it here but they blend in extremely well. Once you get your"eye in" it is possible to find them easily. This was taken quite late on last night and its not often two are found together. This info may help with their habitat management and they do tend to prefer it a little wetter than the other Fritts ( Apart from Marsh anyway )
Nikon D200
Sigma 50 mm 15th @f16 on 400 iso
Timer release on camera and exposure delay on (Locks mirror up before shot )

I find it hard enough to get one butterfly in focus, John, never mind two! The result does show that you took the picture fairly late in the evening, I wonder if a lift in levels would help bring more detail out. Good luck with the paper, and I hope it does help with habitat management.
Photographs to aid in the development of science and conservation of the species. What more could you ask for.. Really nice to hear about your work John and I like the image you've captured. Perhaps a little low in the frame but I can see that if you got lower you'd enter in a mixed BG so well worked on that front.
Good luck with the management plan etc..

Boosted version is much better, John, but yes, the original version made the point you were out late!
