I am planning a four-day trip around July 23 to the San Juans (fly in/out from Durango). One of the hikes I was looking at is the shuttle hike from YBB to Blue Lake TH, but unfortunately none of the Jeep touring companies would do the shuttle due to regulation. Anyway I am left with the following choices:
- Blue Lake
- YBB
- P Basin
- Indian Trail Ridge
For each of these destinations I’d like to camp for one night to capture both sunrise and sunset, unless it’s not really a sunrise or sunset location. So apparently I can only pick 2 or 3 destinations. What would you folks recommend?
BTW does anyone have a feeling whether July 23 is a decent time frame for flowers this year?
Thanks a lot!

Tien-Chien - I'm planning to be down that way that same weekend (24-26). I could give you a ride from Blue Lakes TH back to YBB if you decide to go that route. See what other responses/advice folks give, but you can consider that as one option, if it helps.
I'm hoping that will be good timing for wildflowers. Others can better tell you about the sunrise/sunset opportunities.
Ive only been to the first two, and both are killer locations. If i were you i would check on the local flower conditions before making a decision--for example, YBB has been sub par the last couple years, whereas a few years back it blew every place away--all depends on the particular year and conditions. YBB isnt a primo sunrise/sunset location in my opinion because its pretty much surrounded by peaks, you have to get uyp a little higher i think to be in good light. I havent been to blue lakes for wildflower season. If i were you id substitute Ice Lakes for Blue Lakes--that's an amazing location! I think July 23 should work out fine. Will be interesting to see how the apparent quick snowmelt affects the bloom though.
Thanks Jamie for the offer! I will let you know once I have my plan finalized and need your help.
Stan, hmm Ice Lakes sound like a pretty good alternative too.
