This is my last Butterfly Milkweed post. I apologize for the harsh lighting, this was taken right at mid day, but I went out more for the hike than to take pictures. I came upon this nice bunch after about a three mile hike into Red Rock Canyon at Kanopolis State Park. I thought that the yellow flower against the red rocks with the blue sky might still make a nice image but I think the light is way to harsh for my liking. But at least I know there's potential after a sweaty hike.
BTW, in contrast to Scott, I did get swarmed by the ticks. Next time I'll take spray.
You are brave to be hiking in this weather!!! I've always wanted to see Kanopolis in the summer, but I've always been to much of a wimp to hike it in the heat. Ticks must be tougher down there than up around Manhattan and still active in the heat.
Nice composition on this shot. Have you tried a black and white conversion on this shot? Might be a way to deal with the harsh midday light?
PS Have you ever used Permanone to treat your clothes to keep the ticks and chiggers away? Works great!

A nice composition Ken, mid-day or not. I would like to see some of the yellow variety of butterfly milkweed someday. You sure are brave to be out hiking in this heat wave ... weather kind of like we had for the Flint Hills gathering back in February.
A very colorful shot, Ken. The colors of the rocks and flowers contrast nicely with the green grass. Don't feel bad - I hiked at Kanopolis back in May and found 4 ticks on me over the next few days. I forgot my spray also but sure won't make that mistake again!
