Man in black
Just got back from Saltee and Skomer with Danny and Mark Sisson. A fantastic trip with lots of Sea birds and spectacular landscapes. The weather couldn't be better. Great light in the mornings and evening and birds all over the place. The Razorbill was my main target and I spend a lot of time with these birds. This is one of my favorite image.

iso 200 1/160 sec. F5.6 Nikon D3 with 200-400/4 full frame

A very well thought out shot, underexposed just enough to see the shape of the Razorbill whilst the prominance of the white stripes comes through, wonder what it would have looked like a little more underexposed leaving just the white??
Nice!!!

How was skomer?Many Puffins?Close?

Hi Edwin,

I can see why this is your favourite, it looks like a fine art painting! I really rate this, those fine white markings are really striking and in this case I like that the outline of the bird doesn't stand out from the BG.

Cheers,

Lewis.

This is a truly magnificent image - I think that because you can see the reflection in the top of the birds eye you have added depth, without that the eye would not be visible and the image not so good -

Isn't this great, fantastic images coming up, roll on black and white.

Now that works in B&W! A very well chose image to lose the colour from.
For me it needs a hint more brightness in the eye, other than that, this is a very high calibre end result.

Cheers,
Chris

I knew when we were doing these shots that you'd get something classy like this - really good and glad we've got the monochrome train rolling on here!!

Works for me!! What a lovely, different refreshing image. I'd also like to see just a tad more brightness to the eye but that might be personal taste. Very well done :toast: :toast:

Wonderful artistic portrait!
Love those clear lines and the moody effect of the underexposure!

Well done!

A great idea Edwin but there's more here than meets the eye. A little more work and this could be quite outstanding IMHO.

Hi Edwin

Simplicity is the hardest part of photography IMHO. No gimmicks, no clever BGs or POVs, it just stops you in your tracks, as if the pause button has been pressed. The 'shot' of the year for me. Inspiring Edwin.

On another thread today someone had mention that the Forum was too 'Bird' orientated and I have to agree. There is not enough diversity here compared with a while back, but this has raised the bar in both vision and execution. This might be inspiration to others, but I trust this image will not be watered down by imitation. :wavey:

Edwin, your next posting will, I am sure, be view with much anticipation. No pressure.

It's all been said. Outstanding shot. I agree eye could be lifted a tad and is it actually black and white? Looks like a straight shot to me. Cheers, Mark

I agree about the proliferation of bird images, excellent though most are. Here is one that is exceptional in many ways. Superb composition.

an excellent shot Edwin, but I agree it is your vision that is most impressive. How many of us would have thought to try this? Not me, that's for sure.
