OK, in exploring my various menus I have foudnb 3 ways to set exposuure compensation.
(1) You can set it in the shooting 2 menu,
(2) You can set it using the ISO-+/- button and the main dial, and
(3) You can set it using the quick control dial after halfway depressing the shutter button.
What I have noticed is that the Exp compensation displayed on the LCD may differ from what you set it to using these methods. For example if you set it using (1) then change it using method (2) or (3) then the first display doesn't update, etc.
I am assuming that whatever method you last used to set Exp comp over rides the earlier settings. Does anyone know if this is true? Anyone else ever noticed this?
Hi Larry,
I own a 40D so maybe it is different, but when you change it, does the camera actually perform your new choice? And this is going to seem like an inane question, and if it is, then I'm not understanding your question, but if the camera isn't performing the new setting then are you pushing the "set" button to actually change it? I forget sometimes to do this when I'm changing from RAW to jpg on mine. I know, this is like asking the obvious when something doesn't work: "is it plugged in?" :)

Cynthia--this was something I noticed last night as I was fiddling with the camera so I haven't had time today to go outside and see how it responds. I was just a little unsure as to whether one of the 3 ways to adjust the exp comp over rode the others or not. For example if I go in the menu and change it using method 1, and then change it again outside the menu using either method 2 or 3 then the setting in the menu does not update. So I'm not sure which exp comp setting is really controlling the exposure. I know this is confusing, and the fact that there are so many ways to do things with the camera that it adds to the confusion. I'll check it out after I get home from work this afternoon and report back--Larry
I know, I don't use half of what the settings say. I have mine set so I can bracket manually using the main dial on the back that has the "set" button in the center. I have disabled the auto bracketing function so I only take one photo and then adjust according to the histogram. I think if the bracketing is disabled (where it takes 3 shots +,-,0 or whatever order you choose) then the camera doesn't care what particular option you've picked, because its auto bracketing function is disabled...which overides everything, but I think it still shows the auto bracketing order you've chosen in case you turn it on. Did I just state the obvious?
Well I just did some test shots and it appears that changing it using options 2 or 3 over rides the menu setting. However, these are all reset automatically to 0 compensation after each shutter actuation. Like you I generally don't use autobracketing either unless I am planning to do an HDR or image blend. So I think I answered my question however I'll withhold final judgment until I spend a day in the woods with it. I shot a bunch of images last week that all came out about 1/2 and f-stop underexposed so I'm planning to use this a lot more in the future. Exploring all the options on these new digitals takes a lot of time before you ahve a rwal good handle on what is really happening--Larry
