Hi,
Continuing the Butterflies, Elmley is well know for its bird and hare population, however each year there are thousands of these on the thistles next to the drive, I have been after a decent image of a meadow brown for some time, so after taking my car in for repair I took a drive out in the very posh loan car to try and get one...
Found that unlike my own car a Golf is not the easiest to shoot through the window so I parked near a likely thistle opened the door and window and risking the wrath of the warden knelt on the ground and used the door as a support then waited for a likely candidate to land on my chosen thistle...
Again that darned gusty breeze meaning that once again I compromised DoF for Shutter speed, that breeze also makes it very difficult to get your subject parrallel with the sensor.
Another great example of your work Phil. The DOF carried out here in the conditions has worked extremely well and I like to see some movement in the antennae, regardless of DOF, as you would in the wing of a bird in flight.. Purists might like the antennae in focus as well but It's what they do and wind or not it's expertly captured as usual.
You know you gonna have to give that new toy back don't you..!

Another image with great technique behind it Phil
This 'wind' excuse is wearing thin
It obviously loves you Phil as it's hardly showing its spot at you!
Is there a bit too much thistle in there - I dunno
Quality image again Phil - technique and presentation are of your usual standard. Perhaps a smidge tight in the frame? Not sure, but the composition feels slightly 'out' for some reason.
it's never easy photographing these and I've only ever had limited success by focusing on a particular plant and waiting so this is a very good result I think. Maybe would be tidier without all the OOF thistle heads but that's fairly minor.
I do think however, to improve the comp, I would clone out the thistle heads bottom right, and left, and and a tad more canvas across the top. It is a case of personal choice of course.
Little bit tight but well worked and nice to read your account of it all.
Its an interesting point that anybody doing photography from the car should make sure its suitable also dont forget back windows for when you carry another camera man that the windows go down to a suitable height. Many of them dont.

Another fine image up to your usual standard - any nits that I have have already been covered by others much better qualified to judge!

I too wonder a little about the Thistle heads bottom left but not a lot you can do.

A lovely image with some cracking detail there.
