I did a bit of experimenting with the D3 and the high ISO settings.
This is White Dome geyser and the north end of the Milky Way. The south end has the brightest area but I couldn't get the shot without stepping off the boardwalk and all that it involves (risking falling through the thin crust and being burned to a crisp or worse... pissing off a ranger)
Enrique, an amazing site to see here. We who live in the light polluted territories never see anything like this unless we travel out of the areas. This truly is intense and crowded to say the least.

So what was the ISO and shutter speed. Great image, BTW.
Very Nice Shot! Yeah, don't want to fall into the geyser or tick off a ranger. Either way sounds painful to me!

Great job! This is something I really want to experiment more with myself, especially since getting a sensor which behaves better at higher ISOs. 10D to 5DII makes a huge difference in this area.
my travel companion had a 5Dmk2 so you should be able to get almost the same results as with the D3... plus you get some cool HD video too

Pretty amazing to be able to capture this in 25 sec. Did you consider doing slight light painting on the geyser so it stands out a little more?

Well it might be a little harder to find the big dipper when it's this nice.
I think the light painting might affect the scene a flash or strobe would probably be better suited for something like this. Unless you were very close that geyser.
I do have some painted but I prefer this one, it is a bit more natural, I have always had trouble reconciling the bright stars and fake moon lit objects

I left the EXIF in the file.... f4 / 25sec. © ISO4000.
Thanks!
