Gannet in flight
I have not had much time of late for the forum so sorry for the lack of comments as I seem to have been on the road for the past three months. Had three nice days at home and then tommorrow I am off again to the Shetlands and Flannans for three weeks. So thought I would just pop this one up as I really liked the colour of the stormy sky.

Canon 1DS MK11, 500mm lens, ISO 200

Hi Danny & Goodnight as well..!

I love the contrast light you've obtained in this stormy situation and the detail within the bird is great. Not sure about the lighter coloured sky.. Can't decide if it adds tot he image or drags the eye.. Even as I type I keep going back to it.. Either way it's another fine in-flight shot from you.

Love the contrast between white bird and grey sky. Having the sunlight straight on is a real bonus.

Bon voyage. Try not to burn the toast. :wavey:

I went to Bempton recently and when I saw these hanging on the updrafts right in front of me I couldn't help wondering why shots like this were so prized. It wasn't until I got home and waded through hundreds of second-rate images full of blown whites and dull backgrounds peppered with the Oof white blobs of other birds, that I realised just how hard it is to get shots like this dead right.
It's really good Danny, but you don't need me to tell you that.

This typifies how these birds are almost suspended in mid air Danny. The stormy sky gives a dramatic atmosphere with the impending weather, however what comes with it, is that bright light that has helped to light the bird giving a nice contrast between the two subjects. :toast:

I assume Danny that you used your 'special' f number here?

I've yet to see one of these birds, but with so many great shots posted recently, I'm thinking about a short jaunt to bempton when my foot has healed.

Not sure what Steve means there, but I never seem to get that much dof with f4.0, just shows how much I still have to learn  Thanks for leaving the exif in the shot, it helps budding wanabees like myself understand the technical side of the thought process of such great images. :toast:

It's the background that really makes this pop. Brilliant!
