Hello all,

A recent session with the hobbies on my local patch coincided with a local airshow where some of the planes showing off their aerobatic skills included the Red Arrows and the EuroFighter. This provided quite an interesting backdrop to the hobbies who were displaying their own remarkable aerobatic skills hawking insects and trying, successfully for the most part, to avoid finding themselves framed in my viewfinder.

(Having said that I think the Red Arrows won the "blow-coloured-smoke out-of-your-tail" prize hands-down over the hobbies)

Still with the hobbies; I don't know if anyone else is aware (it was new to me, anyway - I found it on the interwebs so it must be true) but I learnt recently that the football board game "Subbuteo" was apparently named after the hobby because the inventor of the game had his original proposal of the name "Hobby" for his board games rejected by the Patent Office for being too generic. Being a keen birdwatcher he hit upon the idea of using the Latin name of the hobby (Falco subbuteo) instead.
That's one to remember for the pub quiz.

Tech details:
D90; 200-400 @ 400; F8; ISO400; 1/2000th; cropped slightly for composition; levels and curves in ACR and CS3.
Looking forward to your C&C,
RM

I take my hat off to anybody that gets any flight shot of a hobby and this is a good one. Great story about the name. I hope it's true.

Superb shot, you have really cracked this species, you just need a more interesting sky.

Many would now add their own sky at this point, using layers.

Excellent! Lovely pose and eye contact, with great detail.

That's an excellent shot. Those things are hard enough to follow with binoculars let alone photograph.

Thanks for all the positive comments and feedback and thanks to all those who viewed this post. I was on the point of deleting my post after I'd initially posted it last night as I wasn't sure about it but I'm glad I didn't now !

Ray: maybe once I get to that chapter in my "Photoshop for dummies" I'll be able to change the background

I do actually have some shots with background but it's not a very inspiring backdrop and includes things like OOF houses in some of them - like this ONE, for example (quick crop to illustrate the point).

PhilH: yes it was the Thanet Airshow at Margate.

Paul: tell me about it ! I’ve spent countless hours and have often come away with nothing (not even a sighting) over the last few weeks but the occasional successful foray more than makes up for it. The hit-to-miss shot ratio with these birds is very low, especially when they go from cruise mode to full-speed chase ! I usually just watch and enjoy the action.

cracking shot Rob, Hobbies are really difficult birds to see let alone photograph.
The subuteo story is a true one, the chaps name was Peter Adolph, but he had far more of an interest in birds than simply watching them!!
