Went out to a friend's pond to photograph egrets and herons this evening. A hungry Green Heron showed up. I have sevaral shots of it catching fish, but then it decided to pose for me on a nearby fence.

Striking pose, striking bird, and great technique. Wonderful photograph even though the convention of composing to have the subject look into the frame rather than out of it is violated.

Nicely done Dan.

I really like these shots as they reveal subtle details I'd not noticed before. Beautiful series Daniel.
In seeing the amazing detail and sharpness you're getting with the 500 prime I'm beginning to think my "L" series zooms are not nearly the optics I'd once believed.
Of course it could be technique that is my true problem.
Wayne - the real trick is to get close to the subject! I shot a whole series of images of the Green Heron around the edge of the small pond as it fished for supper. None were especially good. It was only when the bird flew up onto the fence not more than 30-40 feet away that I got such images as these. Even then, I should have had my flash attachment mounted as these could have used some fill-flash to improve detail and provide more separation from the bg.
