I've posted a few 'pretty' macro shots lately so it's about time for an ugly one.

This is a small Orb-Web spider (around 8-10mm in size) with its prey.

Canon 450D with MP-E 65 macro lens. F11, 1/160, ISO 100, diffused Speedlight on side bracket, handheld.

This sort of shot probably benefits from being seen larger so here's a 1000 pixel version.

All C+C welcomed.

Like it Matt... always amazed at you handholding the MP-E, I always have to be on a focus rail with something that aint going to move.... sharpness here is exactly where it should be...

Quite formidable little critters and you portray them so well Matt. I really enjoy these as much as the more 'pretty' images you capture with that technique and equipment. Inspiring.

Very impressive - especially for a handheld shot.

Your right about the larger version, I wouldn't want to meet it on a dark night  and as others have said, for being handheld its great.

Great technique as usual. Superb behavioural image of Nature in the raw in miniature.

Great stuff Matt
Is this a case of the flash determining the speed ?
Like my old woman with the back of the head eyes !
Good work.

Continually impressed by the shots you get with this lens Matt, you've really mastered it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this male Araniella looks a handsome enough chap to me!

many thanks for the comments

Yes John, it's the fact that the image is lit entirely by flash that allows me to hand hold it. The flash has the effect of a very fast shutter speed.

Ghastly!

Great image though! I know how hard it is to use a MPE Macro lens, and I can imagine it took some practise and dedication to nail shots like this!

Its very good, difficult to suggest anything for improvement, it works great as it is.
