Decided to investigate a different location on Saturday. Was hoping to find an adonis blue, but they, and the common blues, seem to be a bit extinct in these parts this year.
Found this one enjoying the sunshine though. The sun was very harsh even at 8am!
Cloned out a few bits of unwanted grass in CS4.
40D, a wonky 180mm, ISO 400 (forgot to change), f11, 1/200th.
A male small ?
Nice execution Fran. Not an expert or familiar with macro so personally only ...I find the subject a little dominated by the flower plus the stem growth at the base of the image pulls a touch.
I liked both images but preferred the first. Not sure that I understand why or how a landscape crop would improve the image. There again I'm learning every day.
HI Fran, nice work and I too agree about the first image but perhaps just a tad lift of the shadows, not much but to bring out the internal part of the head of the orchid. Good detail throughout and control of light on the orchid itself.
Agree with comments, use the shadow recovery on conversion, not in photoshop and it should come up very nicely.... seeing it bigger I'm not sure that that is a Pyramidal Orchid though...

John, this was shot in portrait format only, didn't have much time to think about the shot before it flew off.
Rene, thank you, I did consider the saturation levels and have adjusted accordingly, and think this is a slight improvement?

Nice Skipper and to get it on an orchis as well.
Major.

* A note to ones self....always post with a fresh pair of eyes
After a half decent nights sleep for a change, I have looked at both images again thismorning, and agree the first is far better!
