Heath Fritillary (+ New BG)
Was out and about with Phil & Tony at the weekend and we visited the local site for this species. We had a few that were roosting and in the process of warming up at 7:30am. We found a few but were fighting the mosquitos all morning which became very frustrating and it was abut 19 degrees when we started so it wasn't long before the Heath's were on the wing. Light was terrible but we persisted, but I think I need to go back and try some more..

Have a good day folks,

Brett

Technically nice, but the subject seems to be lacking several legs and one antenna. You are right about the mosquitos on that site. I wonder what they eat when they can't get photographer?

Funny you should point that out as I hadn't really noticed to be honest. I have however just checked my other images of the same B'fly and all antennae are present and correct, but dury is now out on one of the front legs.. Must just be the sitting angle.. I told you I need to go back..

I can see the 2nd antenna it is pointing almost straight at you, think all the legs are there just hidden from view... great detail here, with a good bg.... like it.

I thought I had escaped the mozzies... till I got home and realized both arms were covered, plus several on my legs.... or could that have been the Wood Ants....

A tad on the large side in the frame for me but easily fixed. For once I read the first comment, and I think it is your viewpoint re the antenna which is the problem, if you can call it that, re the legs, jury is still out on that one, but whatever the case it obviously doesn’t hinder the b’fly in any way. All in all, a very nice capture.

Good image but indeed a bit big in the frame but the detail is amazing. Very sharp and great colors.

Thanks Guys, it really was a bit more of a study and to push the 5D2 a little to see what I could get from it.. Happy with the results and indeed will get the comp I want in future visits to the site..

Kind regards,

Brett

a lovely shot Brett, the detail and colours are superb. I tend to like them quite big in the frame

Hi Brett,

What a great butterfly! I agree a little large in the frame and the vibrant green bg is a little too much on my monitor, great detail though and an excellent result at that ISO.

I'm in the I like it large in the frame camp . Personally I can't see what a load of green will add to the image . A benchmark in macro for me, a sterling image.. :toast:

Toned down that BG for those that found it a bit garish..
