I took this shot to use in a talk that Brett and myself will be giving this weekend. It demonstrates quite well how the backgrounds are effected by the use of various apertures.
I know which shot I prefer. I didnt bother to spend as much time processing the f25 shot so there are colour variations, diffraction has also played at f25
one image at f25 and 1/5th sec
the shot on the right, f8 and 1/60th
I think that for a true comparison you would have to process both equally. I like to see some background, but the left hand shot goes a little too far in the opposite direction. Something about f11 - f16 would leave a blurred background, but still give some idea of what was behind.
Both shots have their relative merits but I think the mid way between the two might well have been the best option, just so that a indication of the habitat is retained.
I know you shot at every available aperture to illustrate how the bg is affected by the choice of aperture and as such the job has been done admirably.....
Very interesting comparison, I personally much prefer the right hand image. I think the perch adds more to the habitat story than the background here to be honest. What f11 looks like would be interesting though.
A very interesting topic, I too preferred the RH image - it was good to be able to make the comparison and have the explanation - and it would be good to see more of this type of post.
Interesting idea for showing how apertures affect Macro, I think we're all so used to just blowing the background away and having the subject pop out in 3D!
Could be a real skill worth mastering with more advanced Macro compositions where the background is part of the image with the subject, and not 5ft behind it.
